A nice job at a New York PR consultant agency has left Amy (Claudia
Restrepo) completely burnt out - so her boyfriend Max (Ben Coleman),
himself a successful and hard-working banker, takes her to a village in
the mountains for a romantic holiday and to clear her mind - but before
you know it, Max is called back to the city for work, and he leaves Amy
pretty much to her own devices but tasks her to help planning their
upcoming wedding - something she doesn't feel cut out for. But what to do,
she only knows to people in the village, Max's rather vapid childhood
friend Fiona (Caroline Kwan), which whom she finds no common ground, and
Loren (Derrick Joseph DeBlasis), a guy who has given her a fishing lesson.
Now Loren is something she shouldn't find any common ground with, he's a
drop-out who has been living in his car for years now, who doesn't care
much for possession or professional success, and who lives on odd jobs as
a tourist guide and occasional dishwasher. And yet she feels weirdly drawn
to Loren and let's him show her around the countryside and lets him
introduce her to his points of view, his philosophy, which kind of gives
her back the energy she has lost after her burn-out. She's really about to
fall for Loren - when pretty much out of nowhere Max returns from New York
to pick up where they've left off ... Sure, this film shows
many of the hallmarks of a romance, starting with the trope of the city
girl drawn in by a simpler life, but it never goes all the way, as it
actually takes a slice-of-life approach to things, choosing quiet scenes
over inflated emotions, going for little hints instead of big gestures,
preferring naturalism over spectacle, and making this as much about a
clash of philosophies as about love itself, up to the point where a very
ambiguous ending makes perfect sense. And thanks to a suitably subtle
directorial effort and relatable performances by all involved, this sort
of storytelling is brought to life rather beautifully, making for a
thoughtful yet enjoyable watch.
