Only 13 of age, Zack (Lucas Koch) is still rather young ... but his life is hell already, especially after Wayne (Vito Trigo) has moved in with his welfare dependent mum (Nicolette le Faye), a bully if there ever was one who knows how to play her addictions to keep her with him despite the fact that he tends to abuse her and make her into his prostitute, in Zack's full sight. Eventually, Wayne throws Zack out of the house, telling him he has to come home with 50 bucks, otherwise nothing doing, but gives him the "good" advice to just sell his body. Now this is something Zack just can't do, so he tries to fend for himself, but only with limited success - and then a compassionate motorist picks up the boy, and Zack convinces him to drive him and his mum out of town - but when he sneaks into their home to fetch mum, he finds Wayne has turned it into hell in the meantime ... but what's way worse, Wayne's still in, and he's been waiting for Zack ...

Now I have to say a word of warning here, Pig Pen is definitely not for everybody, it's a very cynical and nihilistic film that on an emotional level is pretty much a downward spiral with little reprieve - and that said, that's exactly what the film intends to be, it's not some formulaic genre exercise but an actual shocker that goes from bad to worse - and thanks to a well-structured screenplay, a clever directorial effort and believable performances the film manages to bring that across very well. Just be aware this is not some uplifting party horror but a real (intentional) downer.
