Two guys (W.C.Fields, Bud Ross) fight over the affection of a pretty
girl - and get so violent during a picnic that everybody decides they
should determine who's allowed to court her by a game of pool. At the
game, the two men try to outdo each other by surreal trickshot after
surreal trickshot, until they start throwing the balls at each other, and
of course unpurposely hit the object of their affections. Running from her
wrath, one (Ross) jumps out of the window right into a barrel head first,
while the other (Fields) hides in a basement full of moonshine ... The
very first movie vaudeville comedian lent his face to is pretty much your
typical short silent slapstick comedy, and Fields, who has been developing
slapstick routines on stage for years, proves himself a capable leading
man, one with a mean streak though. That said though, Pool Sharks
is at the same time nothing out of the ordinary, and for Fields' on-screen
persona to really evolve, he had to wait for sound to arrive - which is
why he remained a film comedian of merely minor importance before the
talkies came around.
