The Old West, not too long after the Civil War: Sudden, New Mexico, has
been a peaceful little village for the most time, thanks also to its
Sheriff Duncan (Buddy Clements), a just and level-headed man. So he can
smell trouble from miles away when three strangers hit town: There's
Mattie (Dianna Renée) and Cole (Joe Cornet), she a card shark, he a
bounty hunter, who are honestly in love and are only longing for a better
future but whose guns are a bit too loose to keep things peaceful and
quiet for long, and then there's The Preacher (Curt Lambert), a (probably
self-proclaimed) man of the Lord who has been a slave catcher before and
during the war whose methods were too vile for even the most hardened
Southerner. The three have one thing in common, they're all after some
Confederate gold that legend has it has been hidden nearby, and a map to
which a Confederate Captain has split up between the two women (Vitta
Quinn, Lisa Race) he has been married to at the same time. Now somehow,
Cole and the Preacher each get their hands on one half of the map, and
Cole beats the Preacher to the gold - but it is quite simply too big a
fortune not to spell doom on everybody who gets their hands on it ... While
not free of genre mainstays most of us have grown to love, A Prayer for
the Damned is not another movie that glorifies the Old West or has
distinct heroes - even the good guys in this just want to get by -, and it
does a very good job at that, telling an engaging story rather than
following a formula, and populating it with colourful and interesting
characters whose motivations are palpable. And a well-written screenplay
with some sharp dialogue, a directorial effort that sees beyond just the
obvious, and a solid cast help make this a pretty good genre effort.
