When documentary filmmaker Christopher McDonell first meets Shilpa,
she's a mere 9 years old, but already working as a salesgirl on a beach in
Goa. She doesn't know how to read or write, but speaks very good English
because it's good for the business. She'd love to go to school, but has to
provide for her family. Now this is probably not an uncommon fate among
Indian girls on the Goan beach hawking to Westerners, but something
strikes Christopher about Shilpa, as she seems as high-spirited as
super-smart also for her young age, and he decides to visit a year later.
Christopher is moved by Shilpa's story, so he tries to persuade her to go
to school and get an education, but while he's objectively right of
course, he soon has to learn that things are not quite that simple, and
thus in 11 years in all, it takes Christopher five trips to India to
observe Shilpa's growth as a woman and her gradual approach to education,
while he interferes with things more than originally intended - which
includes running a fundraiser for building a home for Shilpa's parents -,
and ultimately he becomes as much the subject of his documentary as Shilpa
... ... which is exactly what makes this documentary so
fascinating, it doesn't tell a straightforward story with a nice message
about empowerment through education at the end but has the audience learn
through the documentarians eyes that things are just not nearly as simple
in India as us Westerners tend to see them. As a result this has become a
very unpretentious, informative, and also intimate documentary that's
likely to remain with one for quite a while after watching.
