Ex-priest & researcher into the history of torture Vogel (Jess
Franco) overhears a conversation of his publisher Franval (Pierre Taylou)
& SM-performer Anna (Lina Romay) concerning a Black Mass they plan
to organize. Vogel is not quite right in his mind though, as he in his
pastime is torturing girls for the sinds they have committed &
eventually killing them in order to absolve them from their sins and/or
exorcise them - & the Black Mass, it seems, would be a great place
to find girls to exorcise. There he sees a human sacrifice but doesn't
stay until the end, when the host for the evening presents to his
audience the very much alive victim revealing that it was all fake.
& while police inspector Tanner (Oliver Mathot) & his assistant,
college boy Malou (Roger Germanes) fail to find any relevant clues &
suspect evryone but Vogel, Vogel goes on with his ghastly business,
killing a few more people, thenm abducting Anna, who he has fallen in
love with despite her participatin in the Black Mass. It does take a
while until all evidence points exclusively to Vogel, & Franval
decides to set up a trap for him, organizing another Black Mass - only
the trap doesn't work all that well, as Vogel actually storms the stage
& slits the throat of one of the participants, Rose (Lynn Monteil),
Anna's best friend. But as Vogel escapes the place, the police is hot on
his trail, & he eventually leads them to Anna & is shot.
Stylish piece of sleaze, done the typical Franco way, with many a
naked girl, SM-nightclub performances aplenty & a dreamlike
storytelling, all filmed in an almost artsy way, that proves the
director to be more than just a mere sleaze-merchant. Despite it's
notoriety & its typical Franco-themes, it's not one of his bet
movies, though. |
