It's Sasha Grey's birthday, apparently. She sits in a basement, gagged, trying to eat a creampie (a real creampie, not a porn one). Then a guy (Chris Johnson) comes by, the gag is removed, the creampie is eaten and the two have sex. Next it's a spanking session between Alyssa Reece and Madelyn Marie that quickly turns into lesbian sex. Then a birthday cake is served on the body of Jessica Bangkok. Chris Johnson has some of the cake, then he has Jessica. Finally, Sasha Grey and her friends Jana Jordan and Alyssa Reece have a food and booze fight that ultimately turns into a lesbian threesome.

If an adult performer with a fine taste in arthouse and avant garde cinema like Sasha Grey (co-)directs a (hardcore porn-)movie, you expect it to look at least a little artsy - and in this respect, Ms grey does not disappoint, the film's setting, a rundown basement/warehouse including boiler room is at least out of the ordinary yet very atmospheric in its own way, care has been put into the colour compositions that vary between tasteful and intentionally garish, the camerawork offers some interesting angles instead of just zooming in on the performers' genitals as much as possible, and most of the scenes' set-ups are at least vaguely bizarre. That said though, Sasha Grey is still more performer than artist, and once the hardcore sex sets in, the film is hardly any different from most others of its ilk - after all, if you are not an artist like Stephen Sayadian and ready to turn sex into a surreal performance art, there are only that many ways to skin a cat.

That doesn't say that Sasha's Birthday Party is a bad film for what it is, quite the contrary ... after all there are more people who will watch a Sasha Grey film for its porn content than for its artistic aspirations, right?
