Sam (Josh Gad), a budding filmmaker with one film out but still waiting
for his big break, is madly in love with his girlfriend Sammy (Kristen
Ruhlin), a (so far) small fry actress. She loves him back, but looking at
the two of them together, he always feels she's out of his league - which
is superficially true at least, she's really good-looking while he's
rather out of shape. This feeling grows into insecurity when they meet up
with her ex John (Johnny Messner), who's really the total package,
muscular body, handsome face and a secure and well-paying job. The thing
is, Sammy and John are still really close, they parted amicably on a minor
disagreement - and then John asks to move in with them for a few days
while he's in LA and offers to pay the rent for the whole month, an offer
that they, a filmmaker and an actress, can't really refuse. But of course,
Sam feels emasciated. But he does offer Sammy the lead in his next movie,
which is a fictionalized version of their relationship. Thing is, his
agent Max (Aaron Yoo) has offered the role to superstar Kim Powers (Hilary
Duff) behind his back, and she's enthusiastic about it. Of course, casting
her would shoot the movie into a whole other orbit than having the
virtually unknown Sammy on. And as happy as Sam is about this development,
he really doesn't find the courage to tell Sammy ... until of course she
tells him she has to go to New York for a two months run on a play and
might miss out on making his movie - and now Sam thinks it's a good idea
to spring the news about Kim Powers on her. Naturally, Sammy's much less
than amused, and the two of them as good as break up. San still wants her
back though, but will she be able to forgive him? And there's also always
John to consider, who hasn't totally given up on her yet either ...
Charlie Sheen plays a not very considerate version of himself, Debra Jo
Rupp and Wayne Knight can be seen as Sam's parents.
A rather cute romantic comedy that works because it doesn't lean too
heavily in on genre tropes and has drama at its center that despite the
occasional exaggeration feels mostly real. Also, the lead characters are
believable as rather ordinary people rather than fairy tale princes and
princesses. And a very relatable cast, an amusing but never moronic script
and a suitably subtle directorial effort make this a pretty entertaining
ride.
