As general Lu is suspected of being a traitor by holding troops back to
defend the country's border, the Sun-Moon Clan is brought in to investigate ...
& they soon find definite clues that the general is indeed the culprit. But
when the Sun Moon clan's chief Zhong & his deputy Ge Jifend want to
confront Lu witht he information they have to make him dispatch the troops,
general Lu has already set a trap for them, & he kills master Zhong &
takes Ge Jifeng prisoner. It's pure luck that at this time, the hero Shen
(Chang I), who has spent the last years as a hermit, has decided to dedicate
himself to worldly matters again, drops by the Sun Moon clan & learns that
he has been chosen master Zhong's successor. Soon he & Ge Jifeng's
daughter, fighting girl Daiyun go to pay general Lu a not so friendly visit,
& on the way, they help nomad Mumaiti & his daughter Sisi against some
of Lu's men, who have stolen Mumaiti's seal ... Finally having arrived at an
inn, where Lu & his men stay for a hunting trip, Daiyun uses her seductive
powers to lure Lu away from his guards, then she & Shen take him prisoner
... to exchange him for Ge Jifeng ... who dies shortly after the hostage
exchange though, but not without telling where a letter, the ultimate proof for
Lu's betrayal is hidden. When Shen goes to fetch the letter, he stumbles over
Mumaiti & his nomads, who is so grateful that Shen has helped him, that he
sends both his daughters, fighting girl Sisi & seductress Mengmeng with him
to fetch the letter ... & qzuite naturally they both fall in love with Shen
& almost jeopardize his mission - eventually this all leads to Sisi
becoming a nun & Mengmeng becoming Lu's captive ... but she uses all her
seductive powers to better her position ... Shen gets the letter though. With
the etter in hand, Shen tries to bargain with Lu, to find him surprisingly
willing to accept Shen's conditions, blaming the holding back of the troops on
his sub-chief Yan. To bury their hatchet, Lu invites the whole Sun-Moon clan to
a feast (a trap, naturally), & the Sun Moon clan, though suspicious,
accepts. In the end though, the Sun Moon Clan is saved by Mengmeng, who has
since - to save herowbn live - become Lu's concubine & who now saes Shen's
life when preventing him from drinking poisoned wine ... at the cost of her own
life though ... In the end though, the Sun Moon clan can defeat general Lu's
troops, Shen himself kills Lu - for the country ! - & at long last, the
troops to defend the country's borders are dispatched. Nice &
colourful historical drama/swordsplay movie, that alternates quite freely
between action - sometimes rather burtal - & pure kitsch - there are een a
few musical numbers in this one -, cheesy comedy & drama. & while the
action is still a far cry from the beautivful fighting ballets that have become
Shaw Brothers standard only a few years later, this film is still an
entertaining & enjoyable, if not very significant, piece of Easern cinema.
