Paulie (Tom Scorzone) is a hitman who's really top of his crop, and his
secret is that all his hits look like deaths of natural causes, so there's
no trail leading back to him or his employers. How does he do it? Well,
it's his trade secret of course, but it's revealed to the audience that
his daughter Peyton (Brooke Greening) has some ESP powers that enable her to just "will"
people to death. Thing is, even though some
of the people she and her father whack surely deserve punishment, she
doesn't like to take lives, sees her talent as a curse, and would much
rather lead a normal life, something her father refuses her, putting greed
over the well-being of his daughter. But then Peyton meets another women
(Julia Wyrzuc) just
like her, who has used her talent for her personal advancement, and she
makes her accept what she considered a curse as a gift,
a gift that she can use to her own advantage. But now her father stands in
her way ...
One can't help loving Special for its concept already:
Basically it resembles a superhero origin story, but told through the
lenses of horror, gangster flick and social drama. And it works, too, as
this film doesn't put its emphasis on action and spectacle but on
character work, and as a result becomes a rounded out story. And that it's
brought to life via fine performances and a subtle directorial effort of
course helps making this one really cool short.
