Dusty's (Kazy Tauginas) is a young boxer with what's possibly the most
important fight of his career ahead of him, defending his title against
up-and-coming boxer Quinn (Quincy Chad) - but he's not his old self of
late, he's always tired and his whole body is hurting, and neither is due
to lack of disipline or sheer negligence. Dusty's doctor tells him he's
suffering from systemic lupus - a condition affecting his immune system -
and that to continue boxing might prove fatal ... plus he now needs
steroids he has professionally stunned as a boxer to even keep on his two
legs. This is quite the blow for him, as boxing was Dusty's life, and he
tries everything to avert this in his eyes bitter fate ... but ultimately,
he has to announce his retirement and come to grips with his life after
boxing. Thing is, his almost-opponent Quinn doesn't buy it and tries to
get his shot at the title, no matter what - even if it means provoking the
hell out of Dusty ... A very nice and economically written
sports drama, Standing Eight manages to pack a rather epic story
into a bit over 20 minutes of runtime, and telling the story in a way
that's touching without being overly dramatic, and that feels real without
being overly gritty. And a very competent key cast who also look their
roles really help bringing the story across of course.
