Ever since the death of his parents, Jacky Caillou (Thomas Parigi) has
been brought up by his grandma Gisèle (Edwige Blondiau), a magnetic
healer well respected in their hometown in the French Alps. And then she
dies, and it turns out he, who has never shown any talent in healing
before, has inherited her natural skills, and thus also the family
business. And he has also inherited the one case Gisèle was unable to
handle, that of Elsa (Lou Lampros), who hne day found a weird rash on her
back that doctors all over the country could find no explanation for.
After a few treatments, Elsa's rash actually starts to retreat - but then
she grows fur in its place, wolf's fur ... and this somehow links in with
the hardships of local shepherd Bert (Georges Isnard), who has of late
lost several sheep to a wolf even though those beasts haven't been
reported in the region for years. Jacky vows to heal Elsa, also because he
has fallen in love with her, but by that point Elsa isn't sure anymore if
she doesn't want to become a wolf for good - which is a bit of a problem
as presently the town's already organizing a posse to capture and kill the
wolf ... Probably best described as modern rural fairy tale,
this movie manages to come across as quite as touching due to its lack of
spectacle on the one hand and lack of cheesiness on the other. Instead a
very subtle approach is chosen for its very unusual story, a story that
moves along at an intentionally slow pace but with a very poetic eye on
things. And toned down performances help here of course, as does moody
camerawork, with everything resulting in a rather unusual but nevertheless
fascinating piece of fantasy.
