Kim (Lisa Sheridan) and her son Brody (Jonah Beres) move to the country
from LA because she wants to spend some time with her dad (Bruce Bohne)
who's slowly dying from cancer. But there are two things that are of
concern in the region, for one people are disappearing and secondly a host
of mutated frogs are found. Now the police handle the first matter,
believing in a human trafficking ring (though the audience learns early on
it's actually some kind of monster), but the second concern seems to give
nobody and real headache, nobody but Kim, who together with her boyfriend
to be, science teacher Trent (Faust Checho) tries to find out what causes
all of this, and their best bet is the fertilizers produced locally and
used by all the farmers - and that's one of the reasons nobody, least of
all the mayor (Stephen Tobolowsky), wants to listen to Kim's concerns,
since the town's biggest employer (and taxpayer) is the fertilizer
company. Things start to change when a dog gives birth to mutated puppies,
and then even humans show signs of mutation - and eventually it becomes
clear that the monsters prowling the region are connected to the whole
thing as well, and they're ready to strike ... A very
interesting movie that manages to blend eco thriller and monster movie in
a totally serious, non-embarrassing way and tell a story that's gripping
from beginning to end. And add to that a slick yet subtle directorial
effort, camerawork that gets the most out of the local scenery, and a
bunch of very solid performances, and you've got yourself a really good
movie.
