To finally get hold of a fortune in missing diamonds from a heist, the
police puts officer Lee (Carole Mathews) in jail undercover, so she can
help Josie (Marie Windsor) and her sidekicks Vera (Beverly Garland) and
Billie (Jill Jarmyn) escape, and let them lead her to the diamonds, hidden
somewhere deep in the Louisiana Bayous. Once in the swamps, the four
women soon take two tourists, Bob (Touch Connors) and Marie (Susan
Cummings) hostage and commandeer their boat - and while Marie soon falls
victim to an alligator during an escape attempt, Bob soon attracts the
attention and affection of all four of the women, which isn't exactly gold
for their already strained interpersonal relationships. After they have
found the diamonds, Vera manages to steal the others' weapons in their
sleep, takes Bob with her as bait, and sets a trap, wanting to kill the
others and escape with the diamonds (and possibly with Bob) on her own.
The three others however see to it that Vera's little trap springs on
herself, and with her dying breath, Vera actually saves Bob from a
rattlesnake. Eventually, conflict between Lee on one side and Josie and
Billie on the other breaks out, but with the help of Bob, who has long
seen through her facade, Lee manages to knock the others out just before
her colleagues from the police arrive. Not a big movie, but a
nice little bayou-set thriller that makes perfect use of its limited
locations and profits greatly from stringent storytelling, a colourful
cast of characters (even if the actresses and actors are not always up to
their tasks), and a straight-forward, no-nonsense directorial effort. And
somehow, this film, with its tough-talking women and its middle-of-nowhere
locations, contemplates many of Russ Meyer's thrillers (if you leave out
the breast-sizes of the actresses for the time being) ...
