On the way to their camping site for some fall vacationing, four
youngsters (Morgan Wiggins, Ryan Rudolph, Jordyn Peifer, Brad Bell) decide
to drop by a haunted house attraction in some hick town, not expecting too
much for it - and at first, the place meets their expectations, the shocks
provided are really mostly pretty campy. Just a few torture scenarios are
a bit disturbing, but after all, that's really part of the show, now is
it? But when one of our heroes, Lance (Brad Bell) sneaks off to behind the
scenes and finds the control room ... and sees some real violence
displayed on the security cam monitors - which is when he's attacked and
knocked out. It's not long before our kids find themselves in cages,
guarded by a bunch fo brutes and a man-eating dog. Every now and again,
one of them is dragged off to be featured in the next display of torture
for the visitors of the haunted house who are blissfully oblivious to the
behind-the-scenes goings on. But our youngsters (or at least those not yet
tortured to death) are not likely to give up that easily and put into
action a plan to make a daring escape. There is only one problem, they are
outnumbered, and their adversaries are ruthless and will stop at nothing
to get them back ... So ok, this movie doesn't exactly score
high on the originality scale when it comes to its story - basically, it's
simple survival horror based on a simple premise ... but that's really
besides the point here, as what the film may lack in originality it makes
up in pacing: It's one of these movies that seem to never stop for a
breather, it just pushes its story on and on, falling from one action,
torture or chase scene to the next, keeping things tense throughout with
jump scares thrown in at regular intervals. And on top of that, director
Joshua Shreve really knows how to create atmosphere, and has a solid
ensemble cast to carry the film. So if survival horror is at all your
thing, prepare to be entertained!
