A sextet of veterans (Ross Doney, Jackson Batchelor, Russell Churcher,
Omar Mahmood Lagares, Dan Rad, Rich Millyard), most with battleground
experience and one trauma or the other resulting from it, meet in the
woods for some camping, drinking, exchanging (literal) war stories, and
some paintball, with Davey (Rich Millyard), the oldest and probably
hightest ranking, taking the natural if very casual lead. It's during
paintball that Val (Jackson Batchelor) snaps, feeling he's been unfairly
treated. The next day, Davey has disappeared (and only the audience knows
he has actuallly been killed). The others swarn out to find Davey, not
knowing that the killer's among them, and he still feels the urge to kill
... A found footage film - and frankly the not-so-great old
camcorder-like picture quality and shaky camerawork makes one wonder if
this wouldn't have worked better if made the more traditional sort of way.
But what makes this movie is that the characters all feel very real so one
is really invested in them once the killing starts, and thanks to a very
relatable cast they do come across as real. The film's other saving grace
is that despite seemingly random at times, it's actually well-structured
thriller with solid build-up and pay-off. So maybe this is not a perfect
movie, but a pretty cool watch nevertheless.
