A hypochondriac living in a loveless marriage starts to believe his
wife has a lover and wants to poison him. A very mediocre stand-up
comedian falls down some stares, which leaves her grossly handicapped -
but she doesn't stop doing stand-up, even if her monologues come from
recordings on her cellphone right now. A guy well into his twenties
tries to shake the smothering influence of his mother - but doesn't even
think about moving out. Two stoners keep a mattress by the river, where
they sleep, make love ... and sometimes welcome unexpected guests ... Tapeworm
has been labelled as an anti-comedy, and that's something that fits the
film pretty well - but that's not to say the film is entirely without
humour, actually it finds plenty of absurd and bizarre in the mundane
on-screen goings-on to amuse, it just refuses to set any actual punchlines
and rather tells its stories in a slices-of-life way that blends the
comedic with the dramatic and entertains in a very subtle way. And the
very unassuming directorial effort that nevertheless shows much love for
its flawed nobodies also helps in making this something memorable and
despite (or maybe because of) its constant understatement well worth your
time.
