In the 23rd century, when Los Angeles has sunk into the Pacific Ocean (& become Lost Angeles), cop
Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) hunts for the Whistler (Michael Stefani) &
his zombielike minions, the Trancers, "slaves to Whistler's psychic
powers, not really alive, not dead enough". But the Whistler has
found a new way of killing the "High Council", going back in
time to 1985 and plucking the council's members ancestors out of time
just then. Deth, good cop that he is, follows him to '85, but once there
he realizes that the people back then are not really interested in his
crazy story & more than a little reluctant to help him - & when
he has finally convinced Helen Hunt he's telling the truth, he's already
chased by the cops for murder - & the main detecitve on the case is
... the Whistler. Of course, after many more chases & fights with
almost everyone from the cops to the trancers, Jack Deth can capture the
Whistler & send him back to the future, but is himself now stuck in
1985 - which isn't all bad, for he's fallen for Helen Hunt anyway.
Before Charles Band was the Head of Full Moon Entertainment, he was
the head of Empire International, a company that turned out basically
the same video-fodder in the 80's that Full Moon
would turn out later
(and actually, Band would produce quite a number of sequels to Trancers
at Full Moon). This here movie, obviously influenced by Terminator
storywise, but closer to 40's & 50's hardboiled dick-movies in
style, actually isn't half-bad, being fast paced, even having some good
action & never taking itself too seriously. Also, the scenes set in
the 23rd century do show some imagination - though obviously marred by a
limited budget - not usually seen in cheap B-sci-fi-movies (or many big
budget Hollywood-science-fictioners for that matter). |
