The near future, when vampires have made themselves known to humankind
and want to live in peaceful coexistance, since they don't pose too much
of a threat on us humans anymore since synthetic blood was developed to
perfection: Sookie (Anna Paquin) is a slightly naive young woman with
telepathic powers that enable her to read other people's minds - but that
power hasn't done her much good, she is working at a dead end job waiting
tables at a bar and grill in some backwoods Louisiana village, a job she
keeps mainly because she's pretty, smiles on command, and her boss Sam
(Sam Trammell) is in love with her. One day a vampire, Bill (Stephen
Moyer), the first the village has ever seen, walks into the bar, and
Sookie falls for him hook, line and sinker, mainly because he is not only
handsome but she also cannot read his mind, something that totally
fascinates her (after all, being able to read everyone's mind can be a bit
of a pain). But as soon as she has fallen for him, as soon he is gone with
a couple of local crooks, Mack (James Parks) and Denise (Karina Logue),
who want to drain him of his blood - because while vampires need human
blood (or its substitute) to survive, vampire blood acts like a powerful
drug on humans. Mack and Denise want to drain Bill of his blood, but
Sookie's mindreading abilities have given the two away, and she manages to
chase Mack and Denise off and save the vampire ... The next day, Sookie
learns that her brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) is suspected of killing a
woman (Danielle Sapia) and is most probably guilty because there's video
evidence. Sookie's worried sick, but then vampire Bill shows up again, and
promises to meet her after work, and all her worries are gone ... but
after work, she only runs into Mack and Denise, who brutally beat her up
... Pretty much yet another vampire TV-series that focuses on
the difficult love story between a human and a vampire, this one at least
tries to add a few extra aspects to the basic formula like Sookie's ESP
powers and the whole peaceful coexistence-premise. This all doesn't make True
Blood terribly original, but to be honest, this first episode has
its entertaining moments and even shows glimpses of irony. Plus, Anna
Paquin is pretty good in the lead. That all said, this isn't really good,
not even inthe vampire-subgenre, but you could do worse (Vampire
Diaries, anyone?).
