A man (Earl Holliman) who doesn't remember who he is in the least,
wanders around a town that's completely empty of people - yet now and
again he finds definite traces there was someone there quite recently,
like a still-lit cigarette, coffee still cooking and the like. But the
more he tries to find out what's going on and who he is, the less
successful he is ... which eventually drives him over the edge. This is
when it's revealed that he is just a human guineapig locked inside a box
and monitored by Air Force big brass. It was all an experiment to see if
man is already capable of the strains of space travel. Now has our hero
failed? Nope, he was in this box for almost 20 days, and that's longer
than anyone else has managed to endure the strain ... The first
episode of Twilight Zone already ably proves what the series
was capable of, it combined clever writing with unexpected plottwists and
unobtrusive science fiction undercurrents into interesting short stories
re-fitted into half hour television shows. And add to that a competent
lead and a subtle directorial effort, and you've got yourself something
pretty good ...
