Freddy (Ste Pye) buys a video nasty (= a video tape deemed to
violent for consumption by the UK censorboard) from a shifty underground
VHS peddler (Gold Frank) to get some kicks out of spending an evening in
front of the TV. But there's more than just kicks to be had, as later that
night, Freddy finds zombies on his doorstep, and running from them he
finds the city deserted and taken over by the living dead. So maybe it was
true what they all said, video nasties are dangerous. Though Freddy
doesn't yet know about his ultimate, cruel fate ... Now this is
a really fun way to take a stab at the (totally fabricated) video nasty
scare of the 1980s - by showing what these films "can do to
you", by way of a zombie movie, just as nasty as the nasties. And as
a short zombie flick, it really works not only as a send up but also as a
genuine piece of horror as it combines gruesomeness, atmosphere and
mystery in its imagery and really gets one to feel with Freddy. Plus the
final twist is enjoyably, well, twisted, and also inspired, making a
fitting destination for an enjoyable genre piece.
