Ricardo (Cayetano Arámburo) has been raised by his granddad Don
Roberto (Eugenio Montessoro) back in Puebla, Mexico, and Don Roberto has
always adviced and supported his grandchild and eventually facilitated his
move to New York City, where Ricardo has become a successful businessman.
But now granddad has died, and Ricardo returns to Puebla to scatter his
ashes. But once there, Ricardo has to realize he isn't welcomed with open
arms by everyone, especially his best friend Paco (Sergio Rogalto), with
whom he once wanted to go into land developing back home, and Paco's
sister Paulina (Renata Manterola), his girlfriend whose heart he has
broken when he left for the States. Now back, he tries to make peace with
those two, and also rekindle his love for his hometown - while the spirit
of his granddad watches over him and still offers advice time and again
...
Above everything else, this film feels like a loveletter to
Puebla, Mexico, which is impressively shown in the many beautiful
locations the film treats us to. But that said, the film is not just a
travelogue but above all a character study of a man rediscovering his
roots, and through his roots also love - and while the whole story is told
in breath-taking pictures (as mentioned), the directorial effort as such
is actually suitable subtle and leaves its characters enough space to
breathe and develop - and the result is a very heart-felt and engaging
movie for sure.
