Aidan (Baker Chase Powell) just wants to love and be loved, just like
everyone else - but Aidan has problems, he lacks self esteem, he's
socially awkward, and he always acts weird around women - as a result, he
doesn't see that Elaine (Ashley Jones), his colleague at work and the only
woman he can have a normal conversation with, has more than just friendly
feelings for him. Instead, he tries his hands on online-dating, but always
chickens out when it comes to actually meeting the respective woman on the
other end of the line. Then he meets Chelsea (Samantha Boscarino), his
across-the-hall neighbour, a very outgoing woman who just happens to share
some of Aidan's more odd hobbies and who manages to a degree to drag Aidan
out of his bubble. Of course, Aidan immediately falls for her, but it
takes him some time to invite her over, and when she's at his, he's on the
verge of messing up as all the lines he has practised so hard to say to
her come out wrong - and then he tries to kiss her, and her reaction to
that ... well, whatever he might have expected, it couldn't have been any
worse ... Now one would probably be hard-pressed to call We
Die Alone an uplifting movie, the mere subject matter is too somber
for that, and the grand plot twist towards the end sure wasn't made for
laughs, and yet the film is fun to watch, mainly because director Marc
Cartwright has chosen a light-footed approach to the material, manages to
play Aidan's awkwardness for what it's worse without making the character
into a complete joker, and uses some situational humour to keep things
entertaining - and the result is an utterly enjoyable weird little tale.
