Norman (Jared Rogers) thinks he has found just the subject that will
not only put him on the map but launch him into superstardom as a
documentary filmmaker when he stumbles upon Aidan (Ed Hartland), an
aspiring serial killer who might not have killed anyone yet but is more
than ambitious to do so - in a word, he's history in the making. He also
has a girlfriend, Claire (Kaitlin Reynell), who happily supports his
homicidal tendencies. Norman is happy to accompany Aidan to his first
murder and film him, too - but that ends in minor disaster and almost has
Aidan killed. In the wake of this, Aidan decides to change his tactics and
start a Charles Manson-like "family" - and after extensive
auditions, his cult is made up of clearly off the hinge Amy (Octavia
Gilmore), creepy twins Veronika (Ronja Haugholt) and Viktoria (Var
Haugholt), good-natured street food vendor Jack (Yasen Atour) and Masoud
(Kavé Niku), who doesn't speak any English and thinks he has joined a
yoga class. Aidan soon orders his family to commit "his" first
murder, which he's to supervise from the safe comfort of his home. Thing
is, with Aidan out of the picture, Amy takes over the group, redirects
them to her own family home, and they massacre her parents and their
guests at a lavish dinner party. Arriving back at Aidan's, it soon becomes
clear he has lost control over his family, and they're all more than happy
to follow Amy - a big problem not only for Aidan but also for Norman, who
sees the topic of his documentary erode ...
Basically, this movie is just great fun, a mockumentary that
sure has its shocks, but basically gets the most in terms of laughs out of
its subject matter, thanks to nicely fleshed out and properly eccentric
characters, plenty of topical jokes, but a tendency of putting
storytelling over just getting cheap laughs. And a well-structured
screenplay, a direction that transcends the faux documentary style for a
more cinematic look, and a very nice ensemble cast make this one pretty
cool movie indeed. If this has at all gotten you interested,
this movie will be available on Screambox from September 20th 2022,
which offers a 30-day free trial.
