Samantha (Annabella Sciorra) was once a successful singer, but that was
long ago, these days she's keeping afloat doing odd jobs, from delivering
pizza to extra work for TV, and she has long stopped caring, and now tries
to navigate her way through life as best she can, facing everything from
dating apps to her hoarder dad (Robert Klein) with a sarcastic to cynical
attitude, always careful to not let anybody too close to her - except for
an earthworm she finds in a flower pot in front of her aparatment building
and who she tries her best to take care of. She has grown a hard
shell in the process, and that's also thanks to some unresolved issues
with her deceased mother. But what does it take to get through to
Samantha, whose behaviour gradually turns towards the suicidal even ... A
very compelling character drama that strikes a cord with the audiences
because it doesn't try too hard to make a point (or any point, really) but
really focuses on a character that might be cynical as heck, but still
comes across as very relatable, thanks of course to a strong performance
by Annabella Sciorra, but also because there's a little bit of Samantha in
all of us, it's only slightly heightened in the movie that finds the right
balance between comedy and drama to remain fresh throughout.
