When, on a school trip to the zoo, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) & her
friends Xander (Nicholas Brendon) & Willow (Alyson Hannigan) see a quartet
of bullies (Eion Bailey, Michael McRaine, Brian Gross, Jennifer Skye) take a
nerd (Jeff Maynard) to the hyena's cage that is strictly off-limits, Xander
decides to intervene & goes after them. Unfortunately things turn out
quite different, as the quartet as well as Xander both become possessed by the
hyenas & Xander starts changing for the worse, soon bullying others himself
- & the first who has to feel it is Willow, who's secretly in love with him
.
It gets really nasty though when the 4 bullies & Xander eat their high
school mascot, a pig. This is when Buffy & her mentor in things
supernatural, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), know they have to intervene, &
first Buffy wrestles down Xander & locks him in - while his new found
friends eat up the school's principal (!) alive.
With the help of a mysterious zookeeper (James Stephens), Giles soon finds a
way to revert the hyenas' possession, but in the end, somehow Willow gets
caught up in the middle of it, & the zookeeper turns out to be the real
villain of the story, having caused the possession of the five students, &
only because he reverts their possession in the end to concentrate all their
powers on him is he brought down in the end, when Xander - normal again - steps
in to save Willow, while the zookeeper ends up as food for his own hyenas.
A rather bad run-of-the-mill teen-horror story, not made any better by the
fact that all the villains fail to have any charisma, the plottwist at the end
(when the students' possession ends just like that) is totally unconvincing,
& no attempt is made to infuse the story with any humour.
