Roger (Ron Livingston) and Carolyn (Lili Taylor) move into a new place
that's big enough to house them and their five daughters (Shanley Caswell,
Hayley McFarland, Joey King, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver) and run-down
enough so they can afford it. And pretty much on day one, they find a
boarded up entrance to a basement they were unaware of - and sure enough
it's a creepy place. Also, soon the kids start experience things that can
only be described as paranormal, but Roger and Carolyn dismiss them at
first - until inexplicable stuff happens to Carolyn, first and foremost
she wakes up a little more bruised every morning without there being any
cause for it. So before long, they see no other way than to hire
paranormal researchers Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera
Farmiga). The two soon find out that the house once belonged to a witch,
Batsheba, who back in the day killed her week-old baby and then committed
suicide, dedicating her life to Satan while doing so - and it seems since
then Bathsheba (or the demon that possessed her) has tried to possess
mothers to make them kill their children - in other words, Bathsheba poses
a real threat to Carolyn. And their ghost-hunting equipment proves the
threat against the family is very real indeed. So eventually, no option is
left but to call a priest (Steve Coulter) for an exorcism. But then, by
now fairly possessed Carolyn kidnaps two of her daughters with the intent
to kill them, and the only option seems to be for Ed to perform the
exorcism himself - but as he's no expert, that's a mighty dangerous thing
... Now there are
no two ways about it, The Conjuring is not a great movie, it
seriously lacks in originality (despite or because of being based on a
"true story") and the direction places its bets on the tried and
true rather than trying to be inventive. And yet, the movie isn't without
its charms, as it avoids spectacle that usually permeates mainstream genre
cinema of its day but opts for a slowburn approach with the directorial
effort best being described as old-fashioned - and thus quite in tune with
the movie's 1971 settings -, relying more on build-up, suspense and
well-placed shocks than fancy effects work. And that the film did
immensely well at the box office might be proof that an
"old-fashioned" approach to all things creepy hasn't gone out of
fashion yet.
