A girl (Raven Cousens) and a guy (Youp Zondag) who might be quiter a
bit too old for this put on Halloween masks go trick-or-treating - but not
just ordinary, random trick-or-treating, they seem to have a destination,
too, a creepy cabin in the woods, where they are greeted by a masked
person (Rebecca McAuley), who only lets in the girl, hands her a saw,
leads her to the next room ... and here it gets ugly ... Fondue
is a remarkable short because it swiftly moves within genre limitations
and features many genre mainstays - masks, blood, bodyparts, Halloween
paraphernalia and whatnot - and at the same time defies all genre
conventions: So despite the film seemingly treading familiar ground -
which is also helped by the appropriate macabre atmosphere -, the story
doesn't develop remotely as you'd suspect. And the fact that the
characters all wear customary Halloween masks that hide all their facial
expressions and never utter a single word only helps to set the film
further apart from the usual fare. Totally recommended, actually!
