When Marty (Matthew Cottle) & Mandy (Samantha Janus) go to work, for their
agoraphobic flatmate/landlord Matthew (Ben Chaplin) the great boredom begins -
which he fills with increasingly weird activities, from dressing up in stupid
cloths to imitating Robert De Niro in Taxi driver to trying on Mandy's panties.
When he falls asleep in Mandy's bed though wearing her panties & she finds
him, she's understandably upset ... & uses her knowledge to blackmail him
into releasing her from the half year of rent she owes him ...Later that
evening, while Mandy is out with her new bloke Sean (Ian Embleton), some of the
reasons for Matthew's agoraphobia are revealed when he tells Marty about his
hatred for & fear of his deceased, abusive father ... & how he killed
him when finally standing up to him & hit back - which proves to be
bollocks because his parents died in a car crash, & in turn they left
Matthew enough money to afford his agoraphobic tendencies ... Later that
night Mandy turns out deeply depressewd because her bloke Sean has turned out
to be gay ... & it all ends in Matthew waking everybody in the flat up in
the middle of the night when playing the Manic Street Preachers on his
stereo on full volume ... Finally an in-depth exploration of
Matthew's character, dealing with rather serious subjects like oedipal fears
& death ... but in a wickedly funny way - which in itself ios quite an
accomplishment.
