Rich rancher Henry Steele (Charles Middleton) has the valley in his iron
grip since, when making his point, he never shies away from murder, which is
normally committed by his loyal renegade Apaches led by Tonto (Charles Stevens)
& the mute brute giant Mudoh (Noble Johnson). However, Arizona Rangers'
captain Buck (Roy Stewart) has called in his top ranger Bob Sanborn (George
O'Brien) for support, & Bob wastes no time & pays Steele's ranch a
visit. There, he is at first welcomed with open arms, since he brings back Jane
Emory, Steele's prisoner, who tried to make an escvape but fell off her horse,
which rendered her unconscious. But soon Steele has to realize that Jane caught
their visitor's eye, & the next morning, Steele tells Bob to leave rather
rudely ... & sends Tonto & Mudoh after him to kill him. Of course, Bob
can escape his assailants' bullets & make it back to the city, where he
cables the Arizona Rangers' HQ for backup ... when Steele's good natured
stableboy Artie (Forrester Harvey) arrives & tells Bob thaqt Steele has
forced Jane to marry him the very next day. Unfortunately though, Artie's
betrayal has not gone unnoticed, & he is dragged back to the ranch by Tonto
& Mudoh, where he is tied to a horse which is supposed to go over the next
cliff to once & for all get rid of Artie. Fortunately though Bob has
decided not to wait for the Rangers & save the girl by himself, & on
the way to the ranch he can stop Artie's horse & untie him, this way also
finding a loyal ally ... which is what he needs, as he has to notice when
entering the ranch he has already been expected, & soon ends up as a
prisoner of Steele. Thank god though now Artie can free him, help him free
Jane, & when they make a getaway he guards their backs, trying to hold off
Steele & his men with his guns, even if that means giving his own life ... Bob
& Jane flee to the nearby mountains where they find a spot that can easily
be held, shooting dead most of Steele's henchies, before Bob has to duke it out
with Mudoh, whom he in the end pushes off a cliff. But when he is finally
cornered by Steele himself, only the finally approaching Rangers can save his
hide. Steele, who won't accept being caught by the Rangers, leaps off the cliff
to his death - but between Bob & Jane, romance can now blossom. Enjoyable,
well-made Western with Gothic overtones thanks to massive night-shooting, very
atmospheric ranch sets & especially Steele's bizarre killer brood
(especially the mute brute Mudoh), all of which takes this film beyond the
usual genre territory.
