Imperial China: Up until recently, servant girl Ping had no idea that
dragons even existed anymore - but then she falls into the dungeon under
her master's mansion and faces two live dragons, who far from hurting her
help her to the surface again and let her know she's a
"dragonkeeper" - which sure enough would explain her
supernatural talents. Not long after that, one of the dragon has died and
Ping's master is replaced by dragonhunter Diao, who wants to use her to
cage the second dragon, Danzi, and ship her to the ailing emperor for its
healing powers. With Ping's help though Danzi breaks free, but the two of
them lose the last dragon egg, the sole hope for the survival of the race,
to Diao. And now Ping and Danzi set out to retrieve the egg, but they're
up against the imperial army, plus Diao has his own sinister plans with
the egg ... Now of course, Dragonkeeper is first and
foremostly a family movie, so to a degree, things are kept cute, toned
down and a tad simplistic here - but not in a way that insults its older
audience's intelligence. Instead the film tells a rather enchanting tale
in a visually impressive and accomplished way, relying on rather
breathtaking imagery and well-staged action animation, but without ever
losing sight of either characters or story in the process. And for a film
that's basically designed for family viewing this is really already more
than one could ask for.
Dragonkeeper will come to UK amd Irish cinemas on 27th September 2024.
