Karla (Sarah Alexandra Marks) and Tamsin (Ksenia Islamova), two
attractive young women, have nothing more in mind than spending a few
relaxing days on an island paradise and get the tan of their lifetime.
They're even careful enough to not fall for the first handsome stranger,
Jude (Louis James), who invites him to a party - and that was a really
clever thing to do, as Jude's part of a white slavery ring run by Andras
(Sean Cronin), who's in the process of rounding up ten pretty blondes for
a wealthy client. Unfortunately, it wasn't a clever enough thing to do as
that evening Jude follows them to their bungalow where he hand his men
chlorophorm them and take them captive, to throw them into a cell with
eight other girls. Most of the other girls' wills seem already broken, but
Karla, a nurse by trade, has a very analytical mind and puts together an
escape plan based on the girls' strengths and their guards' (Scott
Hillier, Peter Lovstrom) weaknesses, and eventually pulls through with it,
too. Unfortunately, most of the girls are either quickly recaptured or end
up dead, and ultimately it's only Karla and fellow captive Lucy (Sophie
Rankin) who make good their getaway and even manage to take out some of
Andras' men. Thing is, there's way too much nurse's blood flowing through
Karla's blood to leave the others to their fate, so eventually she and
Lucy go back to face seemingly insurmountable odds ... Now ok,
this is hardly the first movie about women in sexy outfits falling prey to
sex traffickers, in fact this has long become a pulp mainstay - but what
makes this film stand out is that it lacks the sensationalism and also the
sleaze often associated with films of its ilk, instead takes its story
seriously, on one hand by downplaying the sex angle, on the other by
focussing on stringent action-heavy storytelling and well-fleshed out
characters instead. And a rather first rate cast and a fittingly dynamic
directorial effort making perfect use of the film's breathtaking locations
sure help to bring all this to life quite beautifully, making this one an
exciting watch.
