Sherlock Holmes (Ronald Howard) and Doctor Watson (Howard Marion
Crawford) receive a rather peculiar package per messenger: A basked
containing a live baby, with a note attached to take good care of the baby
for a while ... and only a short time later, Inspector Lestrade (Archie
Duncan) arrives on Holmes' doorstep to inform him the baby's father, famed
inventor Durand, who has developed a submarine that guarantee Britain and
France maritime supremacy, has been kidnapped. Holmes and Lestrade
immediately rush to the rescue to God knows where, leaving Watson alone
with the baby ... and soon enough, Watson is knocked out and the baby is
kidnapped. Still, Holmes is able to track down the kidnapper, a foreign
diplomat called Tennow (Roger Tréville), and he and Watson pay a visit to
his embassy, where Tennow threatens to kill Durand and family just like
that should they interfere, however with a few well-placed jabs, Holmes
and especially Watson manage to resolve the situation to their favour,
free Durand and family, and secure his invention for Britain and France
after all. Though the whole espionage plot of this episode
seems a bit on the heavy-handed side and Sherlock Holmes and fistfights
don't go too well together, this is one of the more amusing episodes of
the series, especially the first minutes, when Holmes and Watson feel like
fish out of water confronted with the baby - a clichéd scene for sure,
but a rather funny one.
