An UFO crashes into a forest, and somehow the crash turns all the deads in the forest into flesheating zombies - which is too bad because the forest has been used as a Yakuza graveyard, and a World War II general and his platoon have committed harakiri here when Japan admitted defeat in 1945. So yes, they all come back, and soon a group of perfect strangers - a small fry Yakuza, a model, an army Captain and three of his soldiers - find themselves holed up in a nearby hotel ... where the owner has just killed his prgnant girlfriend, who now also becomes a zombie, and when she is killed for good (by the customary shot in the head), her baby leaves her womb and goes on a killing spree.

Our motley crew of survivors makes various attempts to fight off the zombie hordes and make an escape, but ultimately everyone but female soldier Yuri - who now has to realize she's a cyborg - is killed by the zombies.

The finale has Yuri engaging in an extended swordsfight with the World War II general, during which she uses her arm but manages to cut the general in half, nice and clean. Ultimately she even manages to leave the forest ... but has to realize that now there are zombies everywhere ...

Over-the-top and very graphic zombie comedies have long been a staple of Japanese low budget or direct-to-video cinema, and Zombie Defense Army is another one of them, taking its cues in equal parts from George A.Romero's Living Dead-series and from Versus, probably the best and most innovative of the Japanese zombie comedies. Zombie Defense Army on the other hand doesn't even try to be too innovative, it's just your run-of-the-mill zombie mayhem with nothing that you haven't seen better elsewhere - but at least the fim doesn't take itself at all seriously ...

The only thing that's really annoying about this film is its Japanese Nationalist prologue that's full of Anti-American messages - to a point where it demands revenge for World War II.

Excuse me ?

Interestingly enough, the prologue has nothing whatsoever to do wtih the rest of the film ... oh boy !!!
