Your upcoming movie To Jennifer: In a few words, what's it
going to be about?
The film is about the lengths we go and the insanity we are plunged
into for love. It's about unrequited love and the pain it causes. Jealousy,
passion, rage, love, life, friendship, happiness, these are all but some
of the things we will tackle within the film.
What were your inspirations when
writing To Jennifer?
by living life and the love, or lack thereof, from a woman. Simple as
As far as I know, To Jennifer
marks your return to the found footage style of filmmaking
after Hate Crime. To
ask quite bluntly: Why? And do the similarities between these two movies
go any deeper than that?
I have never been a fan of found
footage, but I am a fan of storytelling and the way this story had to be
told was through found footage. It gave the film a heartbreaking realism
and character that I don't think any other style of filmmaking could have
done. I think after people watch the whole film they will see some Hate Crime
type similarities. Also Jody Barton, who played One in Hate Crime,
makes a return as Martin in To Jennifer
Barton interview - click here].
According to my information, To Jennifer
will be shot, edited and distributed all on the Iphone 5 -
would you like to elaborate on that, and what makes the Iphone 5 such a
fine filmmaking tool (for this movie at least)?
I am a bit
Iphone-obsessed. It's like my third arm or my second brain, so shooting
something on the Iphone is a dream come true. Surprisingly the picture
quality is great and with the film being found footage style it really
fits the look. The microphone on the phone also works surprisingly well
and blocks out background noise other than speech, a little interesting
fact. I truly truly love working with it, and It's a very unique
experience unlike anything I have ever done filmmaking wise. We can also
get away with a lot more, location wise, with such a small camera.
just say your previous films weren't necessarily free of violence - so how
far do you plan to go in that respect with To Jennifer, and
what will the film's overall tone be like?
To Jennifer is
more of a comedy/drama than exactly a horror film, however there are some
brutal deaths in the film. That's all I will say about that for now.
You have to
talk about your two leads Chuck Pappas [Chuck
Pappas interview - click here] and Jessica Cameron [Jessica
Cameron interview - click here] for a bit, and
why exactly them?
Ah Chuck. Chuckles Chuckles Chuckles what
am I going to do with him! Chuck is one talented beast! He normally is a
DP on my projects but the man can act and he gives me what I need from him
on screen. To Jennifer
wouldn't exist without Chuck Pappas, not only did
he help come up with the concept but he also challenges me as a filmmaker,
and for that I will always be eternally grateful. He pushes me to strive
to make better films. He claims Hate Crime was a 2 out of
10 - anyone who
has the balls to tell me that I like. He keeps my ego in check.
As for Jessica, that girl has a majestic energy and a recognizable talent.
She also had the "girl next door"-look that I was going for. She
seems to be flourishing within the genre so I felt like challenging her. I
make my actors work hard. She hasn't been on set with me yet (her scenes
start shooting in a few days) but I have a feeling she is up for the
What can you tell us about the rest of
your projected cast?
The rest of the cast are great and
very talented people and I am lucky to be working with them. My older
sister is actually in the film, marking her first feature film, which I
think is really cool. I have always been fortunate enough to work with
talented people. It's also very cool to be working with Jody Barton again,
I love working with that guy. And It was fun working with Tristan Risk, I
So what's your schedule, when will
you shoot the film and any idea yet when it's going to be released onto
the general public (and I realize it might be waaay too early to ask)?
have no clue when it will be released. Right now were on a break until the
weekend and then we resume filming. Some schedules are packed, including
my own, but we are making it work.
