Casino bouncer Three-Piece (Tim Perrin) suspects Karen (Sandy McDade), one of the waitresses at the casino, to steal money of the casino's cashbox, but he can't bring himself to try to catch her redhanded since he is hopelessly in love with her but too shy to tell her. So he hires Jeff Randall (Bob Mortimer) to watch the girl undercover for him, but since he is sent to a mental clinic for seeing his dead partner Marty Hopkirk (Vic Reeves) - Marty is actually there, but Jeff is the only one who sees him -, Jeannie (Emilia Fox), Marty's almost-widow, steps in to do the job.

But while the goings-on at hte casino rather lack excitement, Jeanny soon notices an unexpected face as a regular at the place - Doctor Lawyer (Hugh Laurie), head of the clinic Jeff's staying at, & he's losing quite some money.

But how, you may ask, does the good doctor get the money in the first place ... As it is he hypnotizes his patienst to be his tools in robbing rich people - & natural nymphomanics like Lucy (Fiona Allen) or kleptomanics like Cecil (Richard Todd) might not be the worst choices as tools in the first place. Jeff on the other hand - a private eye - is a serious problem, so he is soon put into a deep trance - which is bad news for Marty, who, still relatively new to the spiritual world, has just taken up classes in spooking around with Whyfen (Tom Baker), but needs a human who can see him to lead an at least relatively normal life/death.

But after Jeannie has solved her part of the puzzle - Karen has only stolen the money in order to get the attention of Three-Piece, who she is madly in love with, too -, she as a thanks for bringing the two together gets some insights as to how high the gambling debts of the doctor actually are & tries to save Jeff from the clinic - but by then Doc Lawyer has already unleashed his hypnotized patients & orders them to tear Jeff & Jeannie apart - & it's up to Marty to turn these zombies against their master ...

Not really all that good an episode as the story for this one relies too much on th second episode of the original series - A Disturbing Case - from 1969, & much of this story, by today's standards, is terribly dated, plus for some reason, in this episode the humour is much too tame to really give it an edge of its own. Support by Hugh Laurie (in the most serious role of the show, & doing great in it) & the ever so hammy Tom Baker is great though.
