Jeff Randall (Bob Mortimer) & assistant Jeannie (Emilia Fox) are hired by
sinister public servants Boolstrode & Macey (Charlie Higson, Tim Wallers -
first seen in the season 1 episode Paranoia)
to uinvestigate the strage goings-on of a secret underground science lab -
& since they have to go there undercover they are given forged credentials
as scientists. At first, the lab seems nothing but the eccentric hobby of
immensely rich but disabled Colonel Anger (Derek Jacobi), who has even
transported parts of the jungle where his plane has crashed causing him being
disabled in the first place to the underground lab - including the planewreck
and a native, Ramon (Nitin Ganatra) - but after a short while it becomes clear
that Anger does not only want to create the perfect painkiller, but conquer
death itself, even if that means destroying the boundaries between life &
afterlife. Fortunately though, this is far harder than it sounds, but
unfortunately, Jeff, desperately trying to convince the other scientists -
& especially seductive Petra Winters (Dervla Kriwan) - that he is one of
them, is helped by the spirit of his dead ex-partner Marty Hopkirk (Vic
Reeves), who knows all the answers thanks to the extensive scientific
library of the spirit world, & he gives Anger & his scientists all the
answers they have long been looking for in vain. In the end though, Jeff
& Jeannie, helped by Ramon, who has (as all native tribes) great respect
for he spirit world, duke it out with Anger & his thugs, until, Anger, who
has with diverse drugs prolonged his life way too long, dies for real &
Marty drags his soul to the netherworld ... Boolstrode & Macey though
have in some way secured a phiole of the immortality drug from Colonel Anger,
& are quite satisfied that Jeff & Jeannie have got them what they were
looking for ... Though the script is somewhat chaotic & mixes
sci-fi-, horror- & fantasy-concepts in a not always comprehensiblle way,
this is a rather entertaining episode thanks to the utter absurdity of all the
elements involved & the full awareness of this.
