Your upcoming movie Alien Love - in a few words, what is it about?
An
astronaut on his first voyage into space suffers complications and returns
home to his wife somewhat changed.
Now how did the project fall together in the first place?
It
was my documentary Aliens Down Under, there's a specific part to it that
inspired a fictional film.
With Alien Love being a science fiction movie of sorts, is
that a genre especially dear to you, and some of your genre favourites? It's
strange I was never big on sci-fi as a genre, in fact I avoided it. It's
taken many many years to find a script that's doable on this kind of
budget. Years ago I almost landed a role opposite Nicolas Cage as an alien
in Knowing in fact. (Other)
sources of inspiration when writing Alien Love? Definitely
Starman and The Astronaut's Wife. What
can you tell us about your co-writer and your director on Alien Love,
and what was your collaboration like?
Ira
Chakraborty |
The
co-writer is a long-term collaborator from America. The director was
brought on board via the distributor who has a long line of credits in the
genre. What were the
challenges of bringing Alien Love to the screen from a producer's
point of view? We
were asked to specifically cast an Indian female lead as the wife
character, to appeal to the Indian market, which did present some
challenges. We also had to let go an actress who was on board but not of
South Asian descent and so therefore lost the role. Think Harvey Keitel in
Apocalypse Now, it was kind of like that to me. You also play the lead in Alien Love
- so what can you tell us about your character, what did you draw upon to
bring him to life, and have you written him with yourself in mind from the
get-go? He's
a middle-aged Caucasian man, an astronaut with an Indian wife. He's
desperately awaiting his first trip into space. To me he was reminiscent
of Ed Harris in Appollo 13 and Ryan Gosling in First Man. I was a
co-writer and co-producer and approached to act in it by the distributor
and the director, as I already have my own brand. What can you tell us about the rest of your
cast, and why exactly these people? Ira
Chakraborty is a godsend and very good at what she does. She's on the
rise. We also had Singaporean actress/singer Riana Adams, John Robertson
from Married at First Sight and Sam Ready from Beauty & the
Geek. It's a stellar all-star cast. Do talk about the
shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere! Edge
of your seat kind of shoot, professional, efficient, economical, exciting
and a hold on to your breath experience. The
$64-question of course, when and where will your movie be released? My
estimation would be mid 2024 for worldwide streaming. Any
future projects you'd like to share?

This is technically my 11th feature
film that I've produced. My 10th Lady
Terror is out now on all streaming services, there's even a DVD and a
Blu-ray in the works and is doing quite well already. The 12th? Well,
we'll just have to wait and see.

Anything else you're dying to mention and I have merely forgotten to ask? This
movie reminds of the David Bowie classic The Man Who Fell to
Earth. I really think people are going to dig this film. It's not like any of my
others. It's unique. Thanks for the interview!
