It's Jess's (Jamie Bernadette) birthday on April 20th - which of course
has over the years also become a holiday for stoners worldwide. So her
friends (Vanessa Rose Parker, Stacey Danger, Justine Wachsberbger, Marissa
Pistone) take her on a hike deep into the woods to do a little bit of
camping - and loads of booze and drugs ... even though Jess isn't even
actually doing weed. But that doesn't faze our girls, nor does the local
ranger (Jim Storm) who warns them of local marijuana farmers who protect
their plantations rather fiercely, a wannabe hunter (Jim Round) who's a
bit too keen on protecting his 2nd amendment rights to be around, and a
scared shitless guy, Buddy (Mark Schroeder), who claims someone's after
him and who leaves them a big bag of weed he claims to have stolen. The
girls figure though the bag of weed's a gift of God/invitation to party
all the harder ... and soon enough they're all drunk and/or stoned to the
hilt. Thing is, Buddy might have seemed a bit on the crazed side, but he
has actually stolen the weed with his firend Dug (Drew Talbert), but a
masked and hooded guy (James Gregory) has killed Dug already and is now
going after Buddy - and after everyone else who might have his weed, like
our girls ... 4/20 Massacre is a charming little blend
of slasher movie and stoner comedy that works because it puts an emphasis
on the better elements from both genres, so you've got brutal murders on
one sight, but a very relaxed and amusing approach to everything on the
other, and the somewhat formulaic story is filled with fun and eccentric
characters, brought to life by a very competent ensemble cast. And
fortunately the film does not go over the top in one direction or the
other to lose its audience in the process. And that said, the finale is
sure to leave the audience on the edge of their seats. Really cool genre
entertainment!
