Asteroid City's main and probably only claim to fame is that 5,000
years ago a meteor has struck the area - and thus by the 1950s, an
observatory has been built and there's a yearly science fair. Other than
that, it's a very unremarkable desert town. But for said science fair,
Augie (Jason Schwartzman) brings his children (Jake Ryan, Ella Faris,
Gracie Faris, Willan Faris) to town, and he also tries to find the right
moment that their mum has died ... three weeks ago. But since his car has
broken down, he has to call his father-in-law (Tom Hanks), who has never
thought much of him. On the plus side, he meets somewhat vain Hollywood
star Midge Campell (Scarlett Johansson), who takes an interest in him. And
then, out of nowhere an alien lands in town to take Asteroid City's most
prized posession, the meteorite that struck back when, and suddenly the
whole town's under quarantine - or that's the plan, as for a couple or so
weeks the town becomes a tourist attraction, shaking up pretty much
everybody's life ... Now a synopsis, any synopsis, hardly does Asteroid
City justice as it's not so much a film that lives through its story
but through its mood, its aesthetics (which are often reminiscent of faded
photographs), its very dry humour, its intentionally often stilted
dialogue, even its play with meta levels (which includes Bryan Cranston as
a host "leading" the audience through the story and actors
rehearsing and discussing their roles). And the result is a pretty unusual
piece of film that's at the same time more than a bit absurd but also
highly enjoyable and absolutely entertaining.
