After the death of their granddad, brothers Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd
(Erik Stolhanske) are tasked by their grandma (Cloris Leachman) to go to
Munich, Germany, to scatter his ashes at the Octoberfest - but somehow
they get into a Fight Club-like secret underground club, the
Beerfest, where all sorts of beergames are performed in some kind of
championship - and when Jan and Todd participate, they are cruelly
humiliated. What's worse though is they meet the head of the German line
of their family, Baron Wolfgang (Jürgen Prochnow), and to their surprise,
the brothers find out that the German and the American lines are bitter
enemies since Baron Wolfgang accuses their grandma of having been a
prostitute who has stolen the family beer recipe - which Jan and Todd
didn't even know, but they want to restore the honour of their line of the
family and vow to compete in next year's Beerfest - and thus secure the
help of their old drinking buddies Landfill (Kevin Heffernan), Fink (Steve
Lemme) and Barry (Jay Chandrasekhar) and make learning how to power-drink
without getting too drunk their business - with at times hair-raising
results. That said, the competition doesn't sleep, and Baron Wolfgang
isn't one to be bested by a bunch of Americans ...
Beerfest is ... anything but a subtle movie, its humour
is loud and often crass, it doesn't waste too much time on character
development, instead feeds the audience with caricatures, and its jokes
are of a hit-or-miss nature - though some are surprisingly spot-on. The
result then is not for people who are looking for depth and
sophistication, but if you manage to just sit back and enjoy, you'll find
yourself rather well entertained.
