Laureen (Rita Calderoni) celebrates her engagement to Richard Benton at an old
castle her father has recently acquired. But even before the official
festivities start, on e of her friends, Rachel, is found dead, killed in a
sacrificial ritual by some sinister monks.
& the celebration does not do much to lift he mood either: Not only has
Laureen a weird remembrance of 500 years ago, when a witch, Isabella (also Rita
Calderoni) was burnt, & only Jack Nelson (Mickey Hargitay) - who curiously
is here in the now as he was 500 years ago - took her side, also Christa
(Christa Barrymore) one of her friend is bitten by a vampire & immediately
thereafter seduces another of her firends, Lenda, who is then dragged off to be
sacrificed as well.
Later the dead body of Christa is found & buried in the nearby village's
graveyard, only to, once six feet under, awake from her vampiric sleep.
That same night though, Christa comes back to scare the wits out of the
living - but curiously, that ends in a slapstick rape/threesome - which doesn't
make any sense at all.
& as Richard wants to uncover the secret - it really has to do with the
burning of the witch from Isabella & a curse her lover count Dracula (no
connection to the one of Bram Stoker's famous novel) has laid upon the village
- Laureen is dragged off & put into a lethal contraption until she loses
her consciousness, then for some reason is released & found in a state of
shock.
& then it really gets wild, as the bitches' sabbath occurs, &
Richard finds himself alone - apart from a few hysterical girls - fighting an
unfathomable evil ... & even the inhabitants of the nearby village seem to
join in on the fun, as they - still reliving their old ways - burn 2 innocent
girls, Mabel & Elisabeth as witches.
In his fight against the evil & his search for Laureen - who has been
dragged off yet again - Richard finds 2 unexpected allies, the sinister
caretaker of the castle & the dimwitted servant (Marcello Bonini Olas),
& they uncover the castle's secret dungeon, where some bizarre tortures are
taking place, & Isabella, the 500 year old witch, is to be reborn in the
body of Laureen. Only the intrusion of the 3 men & their successful
attempts to wake Laureen can put a halt to these plans, & in the end with
Laureen's help they can even kill the man who is behind it all once & for
all - & this proves to be Jack Nelson, isabella's lover from half a
millenium ago.
One of these Euro-shockers that might be at the same time loved &
detested for its very same qualities - it's filmed in flashy primary colours,
it has a labyrinthine narrative structure that abandons realism altogether ever
so often, it contains an abundance of sex & violence, & some
cardboard-characters at best. Either you are immediately repelled by this movie
altogether or you become entangled in its surrealistic imagery - I, for one,
thought it was great fun.
