30 years ago, she slaughtered her parents. 20 years ago, she escaped
from the asylum she was locked away in, killing various people before being shot herself. Now,
each year the demise of Mary Hatchet (Samantha Facchiu) is celebrated in
the community she once haunted with Hallooween-like horror-themed parties
- but some locals say her spirit still haunts the neighbourhood. Enter
some teens without distinguishing characteristics who bring a ouija-board
to Mary's grave to celebrate her death, and later they are one by one
slaughtered by what appears to be the ghost of Mary Hatchet - but after
much to and fro it turns out to be one of them (Danielle Harris), who is
apparently the daughter of Mary herself who has inherited her madness.
Mister Cool Guy (Nate Dushku), the very guy you have known would survive
from square one, ultimately kills Mary's daughter, but in the most
unsurprising surprise ending possible, he is killed by the actual ghost of
Mary Hatchet in the very last shot. The trashy yet poetic title
of this movie shows some promise, and so do the pre-credit sequences,
where little Mary is depicted killing her parents, and grown-up Mary is
seen slaughtering her way through the village in the nude - but the moment
the credits are over, it's downhill for Blood Night, just the
typical teens shown partying for way too long before the inevitable
finally happens and they get slaughtered. Thing is, nobody cares, despite
a lengthy set-up depicting the teens celebrating, all of them are left
totally devoid of any and all characteristics. In other words, you
couldn't care less about any of them, actually their ability to die in a
gory manner is about the most appealing thing about them. For this reason
though, Blood Night totally fails to build up tension or suspense,
things that only work if you feel some sympathy for the characters
involved, and this total lack of tension, suspense or at least likeable
characters turns this movie in one extremely boring piece of slasher
cinema you really shouldn't bother watching.
