Bronson Lee (Tadashi Yamashita) is a superb martial artist - but also a
poor Asian American who has to look after his granny. Then though he
learns about a karate tournament in Japan, and he knows he has to go there
and compete for the price money to afford a better life for grandma - even
if that means to take all her money to afford the passage to Japan. In
Japan, Bronson is at first rejected by the tournament's organizer Mr
Suzuki because his attitude towards the karate philosphy is all wrong.
However, when he beats up the inhouse champ of one of the tournatment's
promoter, he is allowed to take his place. Bronson soon locks horn with
Singapore champ Black Tiger, the only one who's able to tie him in a fight
- much to the dismay of Black Tiger's promoter Sujo, who in the process
does everything to put Bronson out of commission - to little avail,
Bronson beats Sujo and his gang to a pulp - but is blinded while doing so. In
Black Tiger's defense: He didn't know of any of Sujo's foul play, and
demands a rematch to the death with (now blinded) Bronson Lee. Well, three
guesses who wins ... One thing's for sure: Bronson Lee,
Champion is not the most refined piece of martial arts cinema - but it
has this almost irresistible 1970's grindhouse touch to it: A hero with
great hair and a Charles Bronson-wannabe mustache (hence the film's
title), plenty of martial arts (not particularly well staged), a suitably
silly and simplistic script, great 1970's outfitsm, and a suitably funky
musical score. This all does NOT result in a great movie no doubt, but a
fun trip down memory lane nevertheless ...
