It's been a year now since the zombie outbreak, and Cash (Khalif Boyd),
Matt (Josh Covitt), Kip (Chris O'Brien) and Dani (Carly Turro) have held
up pretty well, given the circumstances. But they were lucky when they
stumbled upon a Korean guy (Rikio) who invited them into his bunker just
in time, even if he had to pay with his own life. But there were also
downsides for our heroes: For one the bunker was stacked with tons of
Korean magazines and K-pop music for entertainment and little else, so
they eventually had to entertain one another - and given they were all
strangers with only very little in common, they really got onto one
another's nerves: For one, Dani as the only girl in the group often feels
lusted after, nerdy Cash is hard to relate, Matt doesn't really fit in
with the others due to his age - and young Kip, he's just a hormone driven
ignorant loudmouth whom the others eventually vote out of the house, only
to find out he's got a girlfriend (Alexandra Corin Johnston) when they
remorsefully take him back, a girlfriend he can't stop bragging about even
after he has lost her again. But dysfunctional as our quartet of heroes
might be, they're still family - family out of need rather than blood
relation, but family still ... Given Bunkheads is set in
the time after the zombie apocalypse, there's remarkably little zombie
action - and the series doesn't really need it as it's basically a
character based comedy that derives its humour from its situation rather
than being a genre spoof. And it's good at what it does as the characters
are all totally relatable (and well carried by the ensemble), the humour
subtle enough to also allow for more serious and even sad notes along the
way, and the directorial effort is low key enough to give everything
enough room to breathe. So even if you're already a bit tired out by all
the zombie series popping up pretty much on a daily basis, this one might
be for you.
