The US is threatened by rogue nation North Kiyung with nuclear weapons,
and the threat is so real that a pre-emptive strike becomes necessary -
not against the whole country, just against its nuclear facility. Thing
is, North Kiyung have a solid air force, so to bomb the place would mean
there needs to be a formidable diversion by some really skilled
pilots ... "Country" (Susannah Jane) is the leader of the Wing
Girls (Cabrina Collesides, Brandi Mosko, Marisa Pangaro, Erica Seelig,
Whitney Star), a troupe of exhibition pilots for the Air Force, and
despite their skills they are laughed at by "actual" fighter
pilots, like uber-macho Ego (Stephen Medvidick) - even if the girls beat
him and his men in simulated dogfights any day. But then the Wing Girls
are suddenly recruited to fly into North Kiyung to be the diversion for
the actual bombers, and things suddenly get very real, maybe too real, for
the exhibition squad ... To address the elephant in the room
right away, yes, this movie is taking very obviously a few pages out of
the Top Gun playbook (down to the
1980s style middle-of-the-road rock score), and probably wouldn't even
have been made if it wasn't for the success of its sequel Top Gun:
Maverick - but that's not to say the film doesn't have any merits of
its own, really starting from replacing Top
Gun's macho posturing with a feminist message and playing much
less into being just a Navy recruitment film (in fact, the film in its
opening statement, insists to have been made without the support of the
Department of Defense). And heck, wherever that extensive flight footage
was obtained from (always assuming they didn't have actual fighter jets
without Army/Navy support), it not only looks stunning and doesn't rely on
CGI (or at least to such a small degree I couldn't tell), it's also used
very well to drive its story. All that said, of course if you're not into
pro-war movies this is not for you, but if you're in just for the ride and
the positive message, then this one's certainly worth your while.
