Judge Jaeda King (Naturi Naughton) has just convicted Sean Samuels
(Jason Mitchell) to death on multiple murder charges when the courtroom is
stormed by Gabriel, head of a highly effective cyber security company, and
his troupe of highly trained hitmen and women. Of course, Gabriel's main
target was to spring free his brother, but Jaeda manages to make a getaway
with Sean, Sean's lawyer Jerry (Nicholas Turturro) and security man
Stryker (Johnny Messner), but it seems the whole attack was only part of
the bigger picture, as Gabriel soon enough puts district attorney Hawkins
(Garrett Hendricks) on trial for having manipulated evidence and having
had an affair with Jaeda even - and that trial doesn't look good for
Hawkins. Meanwhile Jaeda's attempt to get herself and her group out of the
building unscathed with her has its own setbacks as of course as Gabriel
proves to have his goons positioned everywhere, one of her group proves to
be a traitor, and she learns that her sentence on Sean might have been
premature and swayed by her affair with Hawkins. But just when all her
chips seem to be down, she proves she has strength that goes beyond what's
just needed in the courtroom, and skills beyond striking a gavel ...
Now first and foremost, Call Her King is a very potent
action movie, it's pretty much Die Hard mixed a with a little bit
of courtroom drama and tinged in a definite blaxploitation vibe. And the
film does what it does very well, it's fast paced, there's plenty of
action, and everything is well-executed with very little CGI assistance.
And plotwise, this film doesn't demand too much suspension of disbelief,
bearing in mind that this is a full-blown action movie. But what makes
this film stick out is that beneath all the shoot-outs, fistfights and
chases it actually carries a very serious social message about the justice
system, and in light of that it's interesting to see how the line between
good and evil is slowly blurred the longer the film goes on, as the motive
of the "bad guys" is actually a noble one while the
"heroes" of the film are by the by found having made multiple
mistakes, often intentionally. And that's where the film really starts to
make one think - and that in itself is already a mighty good thing, but if
it's packed into a piece of cool genre entertainment, even better.
