Emily (Mary Parker) is at the airport to pick up her husband Ernest
(Peter Reynolds) who's returning from the US, but then she sees his plane
crash. From that point on, she's troubled by guilt, as she summoned Ernest
back to sign the divorce papers. Her guilt soon takes a turn for the worse
as she starts believing Ernest's spirit is still with her, and that starts
troubling everybody, especially her new boyfriend Gordon (Phil Brown).
Enter Emily's uncle Colonel March (Boris Karloff), investigator into the
unexplained, into whom Emily confides. You see, Ernest was a researcher
into the paranormal, and she thought she had a telepathic link to him even
when he was over in America, and now that he's dead the telepathic link
has grown even stronger, so much so that she can sometimes hear him talk
or play the piano. Colonel March is baffled - until the maid (Doris Hare)
tells him she has heard the piano playing as well. However, the colonel's
investigations are cut short when he's hit over the head and knocked out.
Ernest then reveals himself to Emily, but in the flesh. Turns out he has
missed his flight back when, but since he was presumed dead he decided to
play ghost for her and drive her to suicide, to then inherit her rather
vast fortune. He tries to kill Emily, but March intervenes pretty much at
the last second ... Now admittedly, this little mystery gives
away too much too soon, so much so that one can guess the outcome early
on, and at the same time, it relies a little too much on coincidence. That
all said, it's a nice watch still as it's well acted, has a fittingly
elegiac atmosphere to it, its scares are well-placed and the reveal
however expected is effectively executed.
