Yuan Tian is an aspiring young dancer, yet she is denied the lead role in her company's latest production, Lola, which instead goes to Xiao Mei. Yet after the premiere, Xiao Mei is murdered, poisoned, and Yuan Tian was hiding in her dressing room (though for totally different reasons) when she painfully died, something which she won't tell to anybody ...

As a result, Yuan Tian gets the lead role after all, while her byofriend, the company's lighting engineer Zhen (Francis Ng) is soon taken in by the police for questioning - and eventually, Yuan Tian finds out that he was Xiao Mei's former lover. Meanwhile, a masked and cloaked man, attacks Yuan tian on several occasions, giving her the scare of her life, and only occasionally is it found out that this man was Shen Hao, a criminal rival dancer Xiao Xiao has hired to scare Yuan Tian away from the role. Yuan Tian though persists ...

Eventually, Zhen finds himself being blackmailed, because someone saw him entering Xiao Mei's dressing room shortly before her death, but instead of giving in to the demands, he takes the blackmailer, the company's cleaning woman Xiao Li, to the police. Still, Yuan Tian is so startled by the whole affair that she wants to throw herself off a roof and is only just saved by Zhen ...

In the end, though, the whole affair takes a turn into a whole other direction. It turns out that the manager of the company, Mrs Wu, was once Zhen's lover, and she killed Xiao Mei out of jealousy. In the end, she poisons herself, using the very same poison that killed Xiao Mei, while ultimately, it is Zhen who throws himself off the roof he has saved Yuan Tian from ...

A very well made, deliberately slow-moving, almost melancholic little murder mystery that might lack the obvious shocks the story seems to promise, but instead boasts a visual brilliance and is full of atmospheric shots - not to speak of several dance sequences totally integrated into the plot - one only rarely finds in contemporary thrillers. Recommended.
