Judith
(Anaïs
Demoustier) is a former pharmacist who has decided to become a
journalist pretty much on a whim - with modest success to be honest, but
now she has landed an absolute coup, an interview with surrealist icon
Salvador Dali - an interview Dali breaks off right when he realizes it's
just for a magazine and not put on film. Judith's editor though believes
in her and hires a film crew for the second attempt at interviewing Dali -
but then Dali runs over the camera and cancels the interview due to his
own mishap. Everything is soon sucked into a dream of a priest where the
main plotpoint is him being shot by a cowboy, a scene he wants Dali to
paint, much to Dali's disapproval - but somehow the painting gets made
anyhow and sold off for a small fortune - but that of course might be part
of the dream as well. Eventually, all plans for Judith's interview with
Dali are cancelled - but then the movie about their interview is released
anyhow (don't ask), and ultimately, the priest even gets his chance to
shoot the cowboy ... First and foremost, this movie is not
at all based on any actual facts concerning Salvador Dali, and how
accurate his portrayal actually is is left on anyone's guess - but the
fact that he was portrayed by quite a number of actors during the film's
less than 80 minutes of running time might give you a hint. That all out
of the way, Daaaaaali! is a simply wonderful movie, a very absurd
comedy but one that takes Dali's art very seriously at the same time, that
lives up to the man's surreal spirit but also his quality as an
entertainer - and the result is just great fun.
